LONGITUDE is a Rhode Island based 501 (c)3 non-profit organization working with visionary leaders of grassroots educational and human rights initiatives in resource-poor countries.  Currently we are aiding a community secretarial school in Ghana, and a human rights organization in India that helps members of India’s lowest caste.  Please take a few minutes to learn more about our projects and how you can help.  Welcome!

CASE FOR SUPPORT

At Longitude we believe in fostering the grassroots community involvement that our local leaders embody.

  1. We support projects we believe in.  We nurture local, community-inspired projects.

  2. We avoid using our support to push an ideal of the “right way” onto the organizations with which we work.

  3. We prioritize our funding based on the needs assessments carried out by our local partner organizations.

  4. We listen and act upon the suggestions made by our local partners for how their communities can be best served.

  5. We spend 4 pennies per dollar on Longitude overhead expenses, which consists exclusively of marketing, accounting, banking fees, taxes, international transportation, and office supplies.

  6. We are a completely volunteer run organization.  No staff member receives compensation of any kind.

  7. We offer donors the ability to choose the programs they wish to support.

  8. We offer tailor-made volunteer and fundraising opportunities.

  9. We keep donors and volunteers up to date on what is happening with the projects they support.

  10. We do not charge volunteers to volunteer.  All volunteer money goes directly to our partner organizations.

  11. We work locally in US and Japanese schools to educate students about global issues.

"Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends."

Longitude sends Staff Members to India!

In early December 2009, Emily Haydock and Michelle Hua (both previous volunteers) returned to Andhra Pradesh to spend time helping Ravi Kumar and ARV. Their aim was to learn more about the life-altering projects being done, to assist in whatever ways they could and to report back.
