UnCaste India Projects

The following is a summary of the projects that Longitude is currently working with ARV to support. You can read more by clicking on the highlighted links in each section.

Kotha Santram and Indirinagar

Longitude’s first project with ARV in India, building in KI is nearing completion. However, there is still much to do:

  1. 5 more families still need our support to complete building work after the government decided not to release funds.

  2. We continue to support ARV’s Children’s Feeding Centre (CFC), which provides children with an egg and milk everyday, giving them the vital calories they need to grow up healthily.

  3. We also support the ARV KI Care fund, which covers basic medical costs for villagers. Without it, villagers have little choice of treatment, or risk huge debts.

  4. Working with ARV, we hope to sponsor a teacher for the next 3 years so that the children of KI have more opportunities in life.

  5. ARV also continues to work closely with the villagers to develop a plan for livelihood development.

Gummallapadu

Work in GP is currently focused on house building. Thanks to previous donors and volunteers 25 houses are already completed. However, there is still much to do:

  1. 50 houses have roofs but still need to be plastered and have shutters fitted.

  2. 6 houses have completed walls, but need walls, plaster and shutters, and

  3. 3 houses are still at the foundation level.

Thanks to our shared success in KI, ARV was able to obtain a government land grant for all of these homes, as well as a Habitat For Humanity loan for each family. This leaves Longitude’s financial commitment at US $375 per house.

Future Plans

Our previous successes in KI and GP have enabled ARV to lobby the Indian government for funds. With a successful strategy and increasing government support, ARV now has the opportunity to expand its programs to 22 more villages. This means that ARV will be able to empower 5,500 Dalit villagers. In order to expand this transformative program that feeds children, builds houses and educates India’s lowest caste about their rights, we need your support.

Together we can UnCaste India and give everyone the opportunity to live a life filled with hope and possibility!

AP Flood Relief
In the fall of 2009, Andhra Pradesh was hit by devastating floods, which left thousands of people without homes, belongings or the means to feed themselves or their families.
The Association of Relief Volunteers (ARV) has been working to aide as many people as possible with their limited resources. They have been able to help distribute rice, plates and cups to over 500 families that have lost everything. Even with this ongoing effort, however, there are still many people without the basic means to survive.

Chevuru

Longitude and ARV are about to begin work in Chevuru, their third village in Andhra Pradesh

Fifty-one families in Chevuru were able to begin building permanent houses under a state government scheme that provides housing grants to people living below the poverty line. However, these grants are not enough to cover the remaining costs of the houses. These families have requested Longitude and ARV’s financial assistance to complete their homes, which have been sitting unfinished since last year. In order to put a roof on every home, we must raise US $1500 per house.

Uncaste India Education Initiative
At present, the majority of Dalit children living in Andhra Pradesh receive only the poorest of education. Few Dalit children ever make it past primary education, hugely limiting their future prospects.
Inspired by A Child’s Chance, Longitude has decided to work with ARV to set up a teaching program in KI, the site of our first work together in India. The 80 plus children living in KI currently study in a school which is not much more than a shell, with a teacher who is only able to visit a few hours a week.
By raising US $3,600, ARV will be able to employ a teacher in KI for the next three years. The hope is that this will not only feed the minds of the young in KI, but increase the self-worth and future prospects of the village as a whole.
